CNY CHAPTER OF THE AMERICAN SOCIETY OF SAFETY ENGINEERS HOSTS EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT CONFERENCE

Learn How to Plan Ahead for a Weather Disasters, Active Shooter, and Other Workplace Crises

September 8, 2107 – Syracuse, New York – The Central New York Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) is hosting a full-day Professional Development Conference on Thursday, September 21st at The Lodge at Welch Allyn in Skaneateles, New York.

This year’s conference will focus on general emergency preparedness as well as planning for a cyber-attack and dealing with an active shooter in the workplace.  A 2014 report from the Federal Bureau of Investigation found active shooter incidents in the United States now occur on an average of once a month.  Of these incidents, almost 46% occurred at a business, while nearly one quarter (24.4%) occurred at Pre-K to Grade 12 schools and institutions of higher learning.

“This conference is ideal for businesses of any size and their employees in leadership roles,” says Eric Fickbohm, President of CNY ASSE. “Unfortunately, in this day and age, we don’t have the luxury of ignoring the fact that we are all at risk for encountering a broad spectrum of crises each and every day. Being prepared and knowing how to react can make all the difference in the outcome.”

Dale Currier, Director of Oswego County Department of Emergency Management, will be the Keynote Speaker.  New York State Trooper Brian DeRochie will discuss Threat Awareness, and OSHA Assistant Area Director, Jeff Prebish, will provide information on OSHA’s emergency management requirements.

FEMA’s Cyber Attack preparedness exercises will be conducted during lunch.  Attendees will also be provided with resources for developing their own crisis management program.  After lunch, the Syracuse Police Department’s SWAT Unit will provide an interactive session regarding what to do as an individual and as a business when an emergency is unfolding around you.

Cost to attend for ASSE members is $90 in advance or $95 at the door; non-members are $100 in advance or $105 at the door.  Exhibitors will also be on hand.
